What does Chicano feminism mean?
The Chicano movement began in the 1960s. It included a wide variety of causes related to equality and the rights of people of Mexican descent, from students fighting for more inclusive history classes to the United Farm Workers (UFW) organization. Chicana feminism differs from mainstream feminism because it includes issues that our white counterparts do not experience. Similar to traditional feminist perspectives, this framework resists and challenges traditional paradigms that developed from a white, androcentric epistemology and diverted attention from issues of gender equality, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and immigration for Chicana students.
